Abstract
- The article discusses the overlooked role of outlying islands in Taiwan's regional security dynamics. Specifically, it focuses on the Kinmen and Matsu island groups, which are geographically close to China. Recent tensions in the waters around Kinmen have created a potential flashpoint in the Taiwan Strait's complex security environment. China has condemned Taiwan for a fatal incident involving a coast guard vessel and a Chinese speedboat, and it has increased patrols in the region. Experts fear that China may attempt to seize control of the outlying islands, starting with Kinmen, as a stepping stone to taking control of Taiwan. [Extracted from the article]
