Abstract

A study conducted in Australia found that feral cats become more abundant and exhibit different behavior when foxes are suppressed. The research, which involved setting up survey cameras in controlled experiments, showed that feral cat density was generally higher in areas with fox control. The study highlights the need to consider the unintended consequences of focusing solely on controlling one predator and suggests that managing feral cats alongside foxes may be necessary to protect native wildlife. The researchers also suggest indirect management strategies, such as promoting dense vegetation for native prey to hide in, as feral cats are notoriously difficult to control lethally.
