Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at the University of California found that teleophthalmology, which involves remote retinal imaging, can provide earlier access to eye care for patients newly diagnosed with diabetes. The study analyzed data from over 900,000 adults with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and found that patients who underwent remote imaging had a shorter time to their first eye exam compared to those who had an in-person exam. Interestingly, 27.5% of remote screenings were performed on the same day as the diabetes diagnosis. The researchers concluded that increased adoption of teleophthalmology could lead to earlier detection of diabetic retinopathy and prevent vision loss. [Extracted from the article]
