Abstract
- The first black matron (someone who leads a team of nurses) in the history of the NHS has been honoured with a special plaque. Daphne Steele, who was born in Guyana, arrived in the UK in 1951 and completed nursing training. In 1964, she became matron at St Winifred's, a maternity hospital (specialising in childbirth) in Ilkley, England, which is where the plaque has been unveiled. Robert Steele, her son, said she would have been "speechless".Daphne Steele [Extracted from the article]
