Abstract

North American sports ministries are a nexus for the relationship between sport, Christian fundamentalism, politics, and capitalism. These organizations have developed expansive evangelizing networks using the influential power of athletic celebrity status and institutional embedding. This article explores the nature of these organizations by focusing on the formation of Athletes in Action out of its sister ministry, Campus Crusade for Christ on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles during the 1950s. To inform the analysis of CCC and AIA, a historical overview of the overlap of athletics, religion, politics, and capitalism during this period is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
