Abstract

This article explores the growing number of state statutes focused on expungement and sealing of criminal history records. These laws have been amended in many states to make it easier for rehabilitated offenders to have their records cleared, recognizing the negative impact of a criminal record on various aspects of life. The article also highlights the disproportionate effect of criminal records on people of color and the potential economic benefits of removing barriers to employment. It discusses the complexities and variations in these laws across different states, as well as the challenges individuals may face in the process. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for further research on the effectiveness of these laws. [Extracted from the article]
