Abstract

Canadian consumer prices eased in January, rising 2.9% from a year ago, which was slower than expected and marks the first time since June that the headline rate fell within the central bank's control range. This progress on underlying pressures may give the Bank of Canada more room to consider rate cuts in the coming months. The Bank of Canada's preferred core inflation measures also decelerated, further supporting the possibility of rate cuts. The report also highlights a divergence between Canadian and US inflation, with US consumer prices rising more than forecast. [Extracted from the article]
