Abstract

A new study conducted by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has found that multistate foodborne illness outbreaks have significant financial and reputational impacts on restaurants. The study focused on the fast-casual chain Chipotle and found that multistate outbreaks led to stock market penalties, negative media coverage, and a change in public perception of the company's smaller outbreaks. Single-state outbreaks, on the other hand, had little impact before the multistate outbreaks but resulted in national media coverage and financial losses after. The study highlights the importance of investing in outbreak prevention measures for restaurants. [Extracted from the article]
