Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. Characterised by insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia, it is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance. It is further linked to pregnancy-related complications, including gestational diabetes and venous thromboembolism. The disease is distinguished by the presence and degree of three major features: irregular menstruation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology (including increased follicle numbers and enlarged ovaries). PCOS is a life-long problem. However, the symptoms can be successfully managed with proper medication and lifestyle interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
