Abstract
- The article offers information on the scarcity of minor silver coins from the 1880s compared to the relative abundance of those from the 1870s. Topics include the hoarding of gold and silver coinage during the early days of the Civil War, the disappearance of silver from circulation by June 1862, and the efforts of the Treasury to reintroduce silver coins into circulation after the war, culminating in the mint law of February 1873 abolishing the silver dollar and half dime.
