Abstract

A post hoc analysis of three clinical trials of the drug tenapanor (Ibsrela, Ardelyx) shows that it can improve bowel function and abdominal symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) within weeks. The drug works by reducing dietary sodium absorption, resulting in softer stool and accelerated intestinal transit. The analysis found that the median time to a response in bowel function was 2 weeks, while the median time to a response in abdominal pain and bloating was 4 and 5 weeks, respectively. The study emphasizes the importance of staying on the medication for a longer period to see improvements in symptoms. [Extracted from the article]
