Abstract

The article discusses the concept of "geodiversity," which refers to the diversity of Earth's surface and subsurface features and processes. Geodiversity plays a crucial role in supporting the natural world and human societies, providing essential resources and habitats. However, the importance of geodiversity has only recently gained widespread recognition, and its consideration in policy and management decisions has been limited. The article highlights the need for a better understanding of geodiversity and the development of Essential Geodiversity Variables (EGVs) to assess and monitor changes in geodiversity. The themed issue explores various aspects of geodiversity, including taxonomy, measurement, monitoring, conservation, and its relationship with biodiversity. The goal is to raise awareness of geodiversity's significance and promote interdisciplinary discussions for sustainable practices. [Extracted from the article]
