Abstract

A recent study conducted at the University of California has revealed new findings on the role of Aire in immune tolerance to the eye. The researchers found that mice with partial defects in two immune tolerance pathways developed severe damage to their retinas due to T cell reactivity to a specific protein. The study also showed that T cell receptor sequencing of CD4+ T cells revealed a diversity of autoantigen-specific TCRs in mice with the disease. The researchers concluded that negative selection plays a crucial role in preventing autoimmune disease in the retina. [Extracted from the article]
