Abstract

This article discusses the duration and prognostic factors of therapy in skull base osteomyelitis (SBO), a rare infection of the skull base. The traditional treatment for SBO involves antimicrobial therapy (AMT) and surgical debridement. However, the recommended duration of treatment varies, and the study aims to identify factors that may influence outcomes and provide clearer recommendations on the duration of AMT. The study found that an average of 6.8 weeks of intravenous AMT followed by a prolonged course of oral AMT is necessary to treat most cases of SBO. Fungal involvement also significantly impacts the duration of AMT. The authors suggest that clinical guidelines are needed to better manage this complex disease. [Extracted from the article]
