Abstract

Australian writer Yang Hengjun has been given a suspended death sentence in China, which could be commuted to life in prison after two years. This development is a setback for the improving relations between Australia and China. Yang, a former employee of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs turned pro-democracy advocate, was arrested in 2019 on suspicion of espionage. The Australian government has expressed its dismay at the outcome and has summoned the Chinese ambassador, but will not recall its own ambassador from Beijing. Yang's health has been a topic of discussion between Australian and Chinese authorities. [Extracted from the article]
