Abstract

A recent report from the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston (UTHealth) discusses the role of histone demethylase KDM5 in the maturation of cardiomyocytes. The study found that KDM5 proteins are expressed in immature pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) but are absent in adult hearts and mature cardiomyocytes. Inhibition of KDM5 in iPSC-CMs resulted in the upregulation of genes involved in fatty acid oxidation, oxidative phosphorylation, and myogenesis, as well as enhanced myofibrillar organization and mitochondrial function. The findings suggest that KDM5 inhibition can enhance the maturation of iPSC-CMs. [Extracted from the article]
