Abstract
- This paper considers H. G. Wells's 'A Story of the Stone Age' as a myth rich in symbolic meaning. It provides three different interpretations of this prehistoric SF story while relying on T. H. Huxley's evolutionary philosophy, Wells's biography, and Wells's interest in mankind's vulnerability to the laws of cosmic entropy as evident in his early artistic opus. By referring to 'A Story of the Stone Age' as a modern, science-based myth and exploring the story's varied interpretive potential, this paper redefines the place of this work in Wellsian scholarship and contributes to a better understanding of this essentially polysemous text.
