Abstract

Gabriel Renggli's book, "Joyce as Theory: Hermeneutic Ethics in Derrida, Lacan, and 'Finnegans Wake'," offers a unique perspective on James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake." Renggli argues that rather than treating the novel as subordinate or superior to theory, it should be read as theory itself. He explores how the linguistic experimentation in "Finnegans Wake" exemplifies the process of differential signification, as modeled in Jacques Derrida's post-Saussurian phase. Renggli also examines the role of linguistic multiplicity in unraveling the possibility of a singular, unequivocal meaning, and argues for an ethical project born from uncertainty and equivocation. Overall, Renggli's book provides a compelling analysis of the complexity and ethical implications of "Finnegans Wake." [Extracted from the article]
