Abstract

A recent report from Johns Hopkins University Hospital discusses the challenges of managing a high-risk pregnancy with placenta previa in a patient with the rare Bombay phenotype. The Bombay phenotype is characterized by a lack of H antigen on red blood cells, requiring the use of Bombay phenotype blood for transfusion. The case study presented a successful outcome through multidisciplinary expertise and strategic planning, as well as the use of frozen allogeneic Bombay phenotype red blood cells and intraoperative cell salvage. The research highlights the difficulties in managing patients with rare blood types, particularly in later stages of pregnancy. [Extracted from the article]
