Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at Jilin University in China explored the therapeutic effect of pseudo-ginsenoside RT4 (RT4) on ulcerative colitis (UC). The study found that RT4 reduced the disease activity index score, restored colon length, decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and increased levels of immunosuppressive cytokines. RT4 also improved the colonic histopathology, maintained the ultrastructure of colonic mucosal epithelial cells, and corrected disturbances in the intestinal microbiota. In addition, RT4 reduced levels of inflammatory factors and increased tight-junction protein expression in caco-2 cells. The study concluded that RT4 could alleviate UC by inhibiting inflammatory factors, repairing the intestinal mucosal barrier, boosting the dominant intestinal microflora, and modulating the expression of short-chain fatty acids.
