Abstract
- A research study conducted at the University of Tehran in Karaj, Iran, focused on the fabrication of antimicrobial nanocomposite films for food packaging. The films were made using polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) reinforced with glycerol, bacterial cellulose nanocrystals (BCNCs), and boric acid. The study utilized response surface methodology (RSM) and central composite design (CCD) to optimize the independent variables and water resistance of the films. The findings indicated that the optimized film exhibited improved water resistance, enhanced thermal stability, and varying degrees of resistance against microorganisms. The research suggests that crosslinked PVOH reinforced with BCNCs has the potential to produce biodegradable films with modified barrier, thermal, and antibacterial properties for food packaging applications.
