Abstract

Based on a case-study of the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation (Geneva, 1922-1946) and the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation (Paris, 1924-1946), working for the League of Nations, this article aims at underlining the importance of international institutions for the conception and dissemination of world literature on a global scale. First, it shows how these institutions attempted to regulate literature through international standards, conferences and literary collections. Then, it argues that these regulations have the effect of questioning and pluralizing the definitions and uses of literature. Finally, it calls for a greater consideration of institutional archives in the writing of world literature and literary history, for they allow us to renew our narratives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
