Abstract
- A study conducted by researchers from the Department of Cardiology in Istanbul, Turkey, focused on the frequency of silent cerebral infarction (SCI) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). The study aimed to evaluate the incidence of recent SCI using serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) levels as a biomarker. The results showed that patients on direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) had significantly reduced SCIs compared to those on warfarin, possibly due to more effective and consistent anticoagulation. The study also identified increased left atrial diameter and the use of warfarin as independent predictors of SCI. [Extracted from the article]
