Abstract
- A recent study conducted by researchers at the Hand Surgery Unit in Israel examined the failure rate and early complications of thumb carpometacarpal joint replacement surgery using two modern implant designs. The study included 381 patients from six participating hospitals and identified complications such as fractures, dislocations, infections, tendon and nerve injuries, and complex regional pain syndrome. The researchers found that the short-term failure rates were low, with only 11 procedures failing and requiring trapeziectomies. The leading cause of failure was the inability to achieve primary stability of the cup in the trapezium. Dislocations and other major complications were rare with the modern implants.
