Abstract

A recent study conducted by the University of South Africa investigated the prevalence of Theileria parva infections in cattle in the corridor disease (CD)-controlled area of KwaZulu-Natal Province. The study found that the overall prevalence of T. parva was low, with rates of 1.3% and 19.9% on quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT), respectively. The prevalence of T. taurotragi, another type of infection, was higher at 39.4%. The study concluded that the adaptation of buffalo-derived T. parva in cattle populations resulting in cattle-cattle transmissions is unlikely under the current epidemiological state.
