On the basis of the newly available Vatican archival sources from the pontificate of Pius XII as well as other archival sources, the article examines how Pope Pius XII and his Curia faced the challenge of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia and the attitudes of the particular Church in the crucial period between the definitive Communist takeover and the expulsion of the last papal representative from Prague and what strategies they developed in order to protect the Church from persecution and ideological seduction.
