Abstract
- The article shares the commercial career of Abraham Salaman, an English Jewish merchant from London, England who migrated to California during the gold rush. It highlights the experiences of Salaman in trading goods and mining gold in mountains in Monterey, California, his business success in Grass Valley as gold mining operations became highly capitalized quartz mills, the failure of his ostrich-feather business and eventual return to London. Also noted is the absence of Jewishness in Salaman.
