Abstract

Several Bank of Japan watchers have adjusted their forecasts for the end of negative interest rates due to recent events and remarks by Governor Kazuo Ueda. BNP Paribas SA, Deutsche Securities, and Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities have all pushed back their predictions, joining Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities in believing that the bank is unlikely to eliminate the negative rate at its upcoming meeting. The reasons cited include Ueda's cautious remarks and the recent earthquake on January 1st, which has created uncertainties for the economy. Some economists now believe that the likelihood of ending the negative interest rate policy at the January meeting is almost zero. [Extracted from the article]
