Abstract

This article discusses the challenges and issues associated with using ethanol-blended fuels, specifically E10 and E5 petrol, in small outboard motors. Ethanol is added to reduce the carbon footprint of fossil fuels, but it can cause problems such as phase separation, where the fuel breaks down into layers of water and reduced octane petrol. Ethanol can also damage non-compatible plastic or rubber parts in older engines. The article provides solutions for managing these issues, including keeping records of fuel usage, not storing excess fuel, using E5 petrol with lower ethanol content, adding fuel additives, and considering alternative fuels like Aspen fuel.
