Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at Southern Federal University in Rostov Na Donu, Russia, has explored the synthesis conditions for Nbf-modified 8,13-dihydroberberine derivatives. Berberine, a natural alkaloid, has a wide range of biological activity, and its derivatives show promise for pharmacological applications. The researchers developed a microfluidic flow system using a 3D printed chip, which allowed them to synthesize hybrid berberine derivatives with an NBF fragment at the C-13 position. This approach resulted in up to a 30% increase in product yields compared to traditional batch synthesis, and the substances exhibited high antioxidant activity without toxic effects on cell cultures. The study suggests that the microfluidic approach coupled with UV-Vis diagnostics is a promising tool for optimizing and screening synthesis conditions of challenging alkaloid derivatives.
