Abstract

Simple dehydrogenation of 1-butene to form 1,3-butadiene was performed at 550–620 °C using Pt/SnO<subscript>2</subscript>-Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> catalysts (SnO<subscript>2</subscript> = 0–23 wt%) in the presence of steam. The low SnO<subscript>2</subscript> content catalyst (7 wt%) showed high selectivity to 1,3-butadiene, but the catalytic activity dramatically decreased due to coke formation during the dehydrogenation. With increasing SnO<subscript>2</subscript> content in the catalyst, the deactivation was suppressed by a decreasing amount of coke. The high one-pass yield (30%) was obtained at 620 °C using the Pt/SnO<subscript>2</subscript>-Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> catalyst containing 18.0 wt% SnO<subscript>2</subscript> without serious deactivation of the catalyst.
