Abstract

A meta-analysis conducted by researchers at Guangzhou Medical University in China examined the safety of withholding hydrocortisone during the preoperative period in patients with pituitary adenomas and an intact hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. The analysis included three studies involving 512 patients. The results showed that there was a higher incidence of postoperative transient diabetes insipidus in the group that did not receive hydrocortisone compared to the group that did. However, there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of early adrenal insufficiency, cortisol levels, permanent diabetes insipidus, delayed hyponatremia, or blood glucose levels. The researchers concluded that withholding preoperative steroid therapy is safe for patients with pituitary adenomas and an intact hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. [Extracted from the article]
