Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India, examined livelihood security in West Bengal, an agriculture-based region in eastern India. The study used the Sustainable Agriculture Livelihood Security Index (SALSI), which incorporates four dimensions: ecological security, economic efficiency, infrastructure sufficiency, and social equity. The study found significant variations in these dimensions across different districts in West Bengal, with Paschim Medinipur achieving the highest SALSI score and Jalpaiguri recording the lowest. The findings of this study can inform policymakers and stakeholders in developing appropriate policies to improve agricultural sustainability in districts with low levels of sustainability. The methodology used in this study can also be applied to other regions in India and similar contexts in developing nations. [Extracted from the article]
