Abstract

A new report from the Centre for Advanced Studies provides insights into sustainable food systems in the middle Gangetic plains of India. The report focuses on the rice-wheat cropping system, which is dominant in the region but has lower productivity compared to the national average due to climate and production issues. The research conducted experiments with early transplanting of rice and timely sowing of wheat, along with an innovative community irrigation approach. These interventions resulted in higher system productivity and water productivity, as well as facilitated the cultivation of an additional crop of summer green gram. The overall productivity of the rice-wheat cropping system was significantly improved, contributing to better adaptation and sustainable production. [Extracted from the article]
