Abstract

Researchers at Yamagata University in Japan have reported a case of a patient with anti-ganglioside antibodies showing multiple cranial nerve palsies, which were detected on gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The patient had various neurological symptoms, including bilateral ophthalmoplegia, facial nerve palsies, dysarthria, dysphagia, and dysesthesia in both hands. Treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin improved some symptoms but worsened the facial nerve palsies, while high-dose methylprednisolone therapy improved the facial nerve palsies and gadolinium enhancement of the cranial nerves. This is the first case to track changes in gadolinium enhancement of cranial nerves on MRI in a patient with anti-ganglioside antibodies and multiple cranial nerve palsies.
