Abstract
- A study conducted at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, has found that a compound derived from hemoglobin, called oxidized adenosine triphosphate (oATP), exhibits toxicity against cancer cells. oATP has been used to modify hemoglobin to create a blood substitute with low oxygen affinity, but it was found to have pro-oxidative reactivity and toxicity. However, when hemoglobin was crosslinked with bovine serum albumin (BSA) to form a copolymer, the pro-oxidant reactivity was reduced. The researchers suggest that oATP and oATP-Hb-BSA should be further investigated as potential adjuvants in anti-cancer therapy. [Extracted from the article]
