Abstract

A recent study conducted at Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan examined the diagnostic value of 18F-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) and 18F-FDG-PET/computed tomography (CT) in acral melanoma, the predominant subtype in Asians. The study analyzed the PET/CT imaging results of 90 patients with cutaneous melanoma, of which 72 were diagnosed as acral melanoma. The sensitivity of PET/CT for local lymph nodes was found to be 41.4%, while its specificity was 88.5%. The study concluded that PET/CT may be more useful in patients with clinically palpable nodes or more advanced disease stages. [Extracted from the article]
