Abstract

In this article from the Journal of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, the genetic contribution to chronic dizziness and episodic vertigo is explored. The article discusses the two prime aspects to consider when investigating the genetic underpinnings of a trait: heritability and prevalence. The genetics of balance disorders are complex due to the involvement of multiple anatomical structures and the high heterogeneity of phenotypes. The article also highlights a recent genome-wide association study on vertigo and a new study on chronic dizziness in the elderly. The findings suggest shared common genetic mechanisms between chronic and acute vestibular symptoms. The article emphasizes the importance of precise phenotyping and the need for consensus diagnostic criteria in future genetic studies in the field. [Extracted from the article]
