Abstract

Techniques in the detection of deception are of importance in all cultures due to their relevance to topics such as security, business, and inclusive interpersonal relationships related to sexual violence. This paper examines the cognitive approach to credibility assessment, as well as the theoretical basis of each technique used and its application in a case of sexual violence. Also, we briefly describe the cognitive techniques that have been developed to assess credibility through verbal cues, for example, the amount of central detail in a story. Research shows that verbal cues are associated with lying, allowing for better judgment between truth-tellers and liars. Considering that non-verbal cues associated with deception are weak and unreliable, one logical step for investigators is to enhance the verbal cues in interviews, allowing for the application of the cognitive approach. Currently, few interviewing models allow credibility to be assessed through verbal signals of deception. In addition, we briefly describe the PEACE Model of Investigative Interviewing and discuss a theft investigation in which different cognitive lie detection techniques are applied using the PEACE Model of Investigative interviewing. We hope this paper will benefit law enforcement agencies, professional investigators, and students by these approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
