Peripartum cardiomyopathy in Europe: new insights from the UK.

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a form of dilated cardiomyopathy that occurs during pregnancy or shortly after delivery. It is characterized by a reduced left ventricular ejection fraction and can range from severe heart failure to milder symptoms. The incidence of PPCM varies globally, with higher rates reported in African countries and among African American women in the United States. A recent study in the UK found that PPCM affects approximately 1 in 4950 Scottish women during the peripartum period. Risk factors for PPCM include obesity, gestational hypertensive disorders, and multiparity. The study also highlighted the significant morbidity and mortality rates associated with PPCM. Neonatal outcomes in PPCM-affected pregnancies showed higher rates of prematurity, lower birth weight, and increased cardiovascular disease in children. Further research is needed to better understand the epidemiology, risk factors, treatment strategies, and outcomes of PPCM, as well as the role of genetics and potential diagnostic and therapeutic advancements.
