Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at Yangzhou University in China has found that genetically related avian influenza H7N9 viruses exhibit different levels of pathogenicity in mice. The H7N9 subtype of avian influenza emerged in China in 2013 and caused numerous human infections with a high mortality rate. The researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of H7N9 viruses isolated from live poultry markets in 2013 and found that two avian-origin H7N9 isolates had a similar genetic background but exhibited different levels of pathogenicity in mice. The study highlights the importance of monitoring adaptive mutations in avian influenza viruses with zoonotic potential. [Extracted from the article]
