Abstract
- A recent study conducted in the Borena District of South Wollo Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia, aimed to determine the prevalence of bovine mastitis and its associated risk factors in different production systems. The study found that the overall prevalence of bovine mastitis in the area was 73%, with subclinical mastitis accounting for 55.5% and clinical mastitis accounting for 17.5%. The prevalence was significantly higher in peri-urban production systems compared to rural smallholder production systems. Factors such as breed, stage of lactation, parity, and barn hygiene were found to play significant roles in the prevalence of mastitis. The researchers concluded that improving awareness among dairy cow owners about udder cleanliness, regular cleaning of floor conditions, and medical intervention are necessary to improve mastitis prevention and control programs in the study areas.
