Abstract

A new study commissioned by ICOMIA, an international marine industry organization, has found that sustainable 'drop-in' fuels like HVO and e-gasoline are currently the best and fastest solution for reducing the carbon footprint of recreational boats. The study examined nine common types of boats and five different propulsion methods, considering factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, cost, and practicality. The report concluded that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, as the results depend on the type and usage of the boat. For most boat owners, switching to sustainable fuels is the most effective way to minimize CO2 emissions without compromising range or performance. However, hybrid, electric, and hydrogen-powered boats are more suitable for smaller categories and regularly used boats. [Extracted from the article]
