Abstract
- A literary criticism of Edwidge Danticat's novel "Breath, Eyes, Memory," discusses the portrayal of bulimia as postcolonial trauma. Topics include Sophie Caco's disordered eating behaviors in the U.S.; stemming from experiences of exile and sexual abuse; how Danticat presents bulimia as a symbol of transgenerational and colonial traumas; and the intersections of neocolonial violence, patriarchal oppression & the impact of historical events such as the Duvalier regime on Sophie's affliction.
