Abstract

New research conducted by the University of the Basque Country (UPV) in Vitoria Gasteiz, Spain, has found that Arcobacter, a type of Gram-Negative Bacteria, exhibits high virulent activity in Caco-2 cells. The study aimed to determine the infection mechanisms of Arcobacter and whether specific genetic markers were related to host cell adhesion and invasion. The results showed that all isolates of Arcobacter adhered and invaded the cells, with A. butzleri showing superior virulent activity compared to A. cryaerophilus. The study also identified an association between certain genetic markers and high adhesion capability. The research highlights the pathogenic potential of Arcobacter species in food and water, emphasizing the importance of sewage as a potential source of more virulent arcobacters.
