Abstract

A study conducted in Maharashtra, India, explores the use of laccase-producing marine actinomycetes in accelerating the biodegradation of polyethylene. The researchers highlight the environmental harm caused by plastic waste and the need for sustainable waste management solutions. The study found that treating polyethylene with laccase enzyme resulted in a 9.36 percent rate of biodegradation, six times higher than untreated polyethylene. The researchers also observed changes in the chemical structure of the polyethylene, confirming its oxidation and utilization by microorganisms. The laccase-producing isolate identified in the study was Streptomyces rubiginosus. [Extracted from the article]
