Abstract
- A study published in the journal Clinical & Experimental Allergy examined the effectiveness and safety of low-dose oral immunotherapy (OIT) protocols in children with milk and egg allergies. The study included 217 children and found that ultra-low dose OIT was effective and safe, with no cases of anaphylaxis or severe adverse events. The study also compared different dosing strategies and found that the ultra-low dose group had the highest rate of increased cumulative tolerated dose and the lowest rate of adverse events. The study suggests that even tiny doses of allergenic foods may be sufficient to induce immunotolerance in childhood egg and milk allergies. However, the study has limitations, including its retrospective design and small, heterogeneous population. Further research is needed to standardize OIT methods and understand the immune mechanisms underlying the anti-allergic response. The study was funded by the National Center for Child Health and Development and the authors declare no conflicts of interest. [Extracted from the article]
