Abstract

A recent study conducted at the Second Affiliated Hospital in Fuzhou, China, explored the clinical efficacy of modified Buyang Huanwu Decoction in treating non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) in patients with qi and yin deficiency and stagnation of collaterals. The study used optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to quantitatively analyze changes in peripapillary vessel density before and after treatment. The results showed that the group receiving modified Buyang Huanwu Decoction in addition to basic treatment experienced improved visual acuity, traditional Chinese medicine efficacy, peripapillary vessel density, and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness compared to the control group. The researchers concluded that modified Buyang Huanwu Decoction may improve blood flow to the optic disc and reduce damage to the retinal nerve fiber layer in patients with NPDR.
