Abstract

Iran has begun deporting Afghan refugees without valid papers, signaling a change in its policy of accepting Afghan migrants. Estimates of the number of Afghans in Iran vary widely, with the UNHCR estimating 7.6 million, including those who arrived after August 2021. The Iranian government's decision to deport Afghan refugees may be linked to tensions with the Taliban over cross-border water resources and a lack of international assistance. The deportation efforts in Iran are quieter compared to Pakistan, where the government has announced its intention to deport 1.4 million Afghan refugees. The timing of Iran's decision is challenging for the Taliban, as Afghanistan is already facing a devastating humanitarian crisis. [Extracted from the article]
