Abstract

This article examines the concept of restorative justice in a diverse and ever-changing world. It argues against a universal definition of restorative justice and emphasizes the importance of understanding the political contexts in which it operates. The authors advocate for a more inclusive and expansive vision of restorative justice that extends beyond the criminal legal system and encompasses various sociopolitical projects. They also highlight the role of language in shaping the understanding and implementation of restorative justice. The article calls for those in the field to take responsibility for their influence and create space for new ideas and innovations. It argues against the use of traditional language and practices, particularly those borrowed from Indigenous traditions, suggesting that relying on these forms limits innovation and inclusivity. Instead, the authors propose the use of linguistic abstractions and conversational domains to foster new possibilities and understandings of restorative justice. They argue that restorative justice should not be confined to the criminal-legal system, but should instead focus on transformative relationships and collective liberation. The text calls for a broader understanding of restorative justice that challenges existing power structures and promotes justice for all. [Extracted from the article]
